Gary Malkin, head of the library and archives at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts treated the audience to a fascinating pit stop visual tour of his favourite Baltic shows which particularly featured colour. Top of the list included the Anish Kapoor red installation Tarantantara in 1999 before this iconic building was even completed in 2002 and the striking use of coloured light and prisms by artist Daniel Buren in 2014.
The audience then moved into the Baltic Library where Gary showed a selection of colourful contemporary art and photographic books highlighting work from the 1950s onwards. Members of the audience were then asked to choose books from the vast array which appealed to them visually because of their covers. The contents were examined and this led to a discussion of how colour can drive us to make certain aesthetic choices.
The striking view of the Tyne river and the Newcastle quayside and Millennium Bridge made this meeting a particular success.
